Shipster marks 10 years with senior hires to drive innovation

Tue, 26th Aug 2025

Shipster has marked its 10-year anniversary by expanding its senior team to support the ongoing development of eCommerce software solutions.

Manchester-based Shipster, known for providing shipping software for a range of eCommerce companies, has grown from a small team focused on bespoke integrations to a platform now processing tens of millions of shipments annually. The company has adapted through changes in global shipping regulations and currently serves over 100 retailers by offering tools for streamlined logistics operations.

The latest changes to Shipster's senior leadership include the recruitment of Phillip Smyth as Senior Developer. Smyth joins with experience in software development, warehouse systems, and innovation management from companies such as Körber Supply Chain and BAE Systems. His background also spans sectors including game development, fashion technology, and critical national infrastructure.

In addition, Rachel Bircher has been promoted to Head of Support. Bircher started at Shipster in 2020 as a part-time support technician and progressed to lead the growing support department. The company credits her advancement as a demonstration of its approach to internal growth and recognises the increasing role of customer support as part of Shipster's daily operations.

These appointments form part of Shipster's long-term strategy to focus on both product innovation and customer service as it moves into its second decade. The company is developing enhanced post-purchase journey solutions, which will provide branded delivery experiences and improved returns tools for its clients. This focus addresses new expectations from eCommerce businesses and their customers for greater convenience and personalisation in delivery services.

Tony Cheetham, Founder and Managing Director, said, "For a decade, Shipster has been disrupting the eCommerce shipping space, offering businesses an affordable, customisable and flexible alternative to off-the-shelf platforms. We're proud of how far we've come, and these changes position us to go even further - evolving as a business and building the capabilities we need to deliver the next generation of products."

Cheetham highlighted the business's progress and the importance of adapting to new challenges in the shipping sector. He also pointed to recruitment decisions as central to Shipster's intention to stay relevant and competitive as client needs evolve.

Smyth will be responsible for leading the development of new software offerings, working closely with Cheetham. His appointment is expected to contribute to driving innovation within the company.

Phillip Smyth said, "Joining Shipster at such a pivotal time is incredibly exciting. There's a clear vision for innovation, and a culture that empowers developers. I'm thrilled to be part of shaping the next generation of products that will help our clients create smarter and more convenient delivery experiences for their customers."

Bircher's promotion recognises her contribution towards the company's support team and her role in integrating customer feedback into Shipster's services. The company sees her journey from technical support to a management role as a key example of internal development and commitment to employee progression.

Rachel Bircher said, "It's been amazing to grow with Shipster. From joining as a support technician to now leading the department, I've had the chance to learn, build, and make a real impact. I'm proud to be part of a team that puts customers first and excited to help shape how we support them as the company moves into its next chapter."

Shipster was established in 2015 by Oddsphere. Since then, it has provided solutions to retailers including Couture Club, SkateHut, Global Football Company, AYBL, and Rixo. Strategic hires, office enlargement, and guidance from investors such as the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund and Fearless Adventures have aided its expansion.

The platform is currently in use at over 2,000 warehouse packing stations, facilitating tens of millions of shipments a year. Shipster has also solidified its presence within the sector through integrations with third-party platforms such as Ordorite, Descartes Peoplevox, Huxloe, and Shopify.

Cheetham added, "We've always stayed close to our customers, listening carefully and adapting fast. This next chapter is about deepening that commitment, building the tools they need to stay competitive, and making sure we're always one step ahead of what's coming next."
