Gumtree partners ShipStation to power UK reCommerce shift

Wed, 7th Jan 2026

Gumtree has signed a multi-year partnership with shipping software provider ShipStation as it moves towards becoming a fully transactional online marketplace in the UK.

The agreement marks Gumtree's first direct investment in delivery infrastructure for its platform. The company said the change will shift its service from listings that often relied on in-person collection towards integrated online buying and delivery.

Under the partnership, Gumtree will deploy ShipStation's application programming interface across its marketplace. The integration will place delivery tools directly inside the Gumtree platform for sellers and buyers.

The ShipStation API connects marketplaces and online retailers with a range of parcel carriers. It standardises access to shipping services through a single connection.

Integrated delivery

Gumtree users will gain access to carrier management services through the ShipStation link. Sellers will handle delivery within their Gumtree accounts instead of arranging shipping separately.

The system will allow automatic creation of shipping labels for orders placed on the site. Users will also see real-time tracking information for parcels within the marketplace environment.

ShipStation aggregates multiple carriers under one interface. This approach lets platforms offer a wider range of delivery options without building separate integrations for each provider.

Gumtree said the new tools will cut complexity for individuals and small traders that use the site. Buyers will receive tracking and delivery updates in a consistent format regardless of carrier.

The changes are designed as part of a broader shift at Gumtree. The marketplace is moving away from its origins as a largely local classifieds service that focused on face-to-face exchanges.

ReCommerce growth

The move comes as second-hand and reCommerce activity expands in the UK. Research from Retail Economics projects that the domestic reCommerce sector will reach £12.4 billion by 2028.

Analysts link growth in the segment with changing consumer behaviour and greater focus on value and sustainability. Established marketplaces have started to upgrade fulfilment and transaction features as buyers grow more comfortable with purchasing pre-owned goods online.

Reliable delivery has become a central factor in repeat usage of marketplace platforms. Tracking, predictable arrival times and clear returns processes influence whether users trust online channels for higher-value second-hand items.

Gumtree has a reported audience of about 10 million monthly users in the UK. Many users sell occasional items or clear out household goods rather than operate formal online shops.

The company expects that more structured delivery tools will appeal to casual sellers and more frequent traders. It also expects that easier shipping options will broaden the geographic range of transactions on the site.

Leadership comments

Gumtree said the ShipStation relationship is central to its marketplace strategy. It described the shipping specialist as a key partner for its new transactional model.

Kim Faura, Joint Managing Director at Gumtree, said the integration aligns with the company's long-term ambitions. He positioned the shift as a step in Gumtree's evolution from classifieds to a destination for everyday shopping.

"As we realise our vision for Gumtree to become the go-to marketplace for the home, ShipStation was the natural partner. Their expertise in advanced technology, logistics and carrier management will ensure our customers experience smooth and efficient transactions that transform how people buy and sell on the platform," said Faura.

ShipStation is part of Auctane, a group that operates several delivery and shipping software services. The company works with carriers globally and integrates with various eCommerce and marketplace platforms.

Kelly Vincent, Chief Product Officer at Auctane, said demand for integrated delivery within reCommerce is increasing. She said marketplaces now sit at the centre of consumer resale activity.

"We are proud to support Gumtree as it makes its first foray into integrated delivery. As more consumers embrace reCommerce and marketplaces become the go-to destination for buying and selling pre-owned items, our API empowers platforms like Gumtree to offer seamless delivery experiences. This drives customer engagement and loyalty while simplifying operations and supporting business growth," said Vincent.

Competitive landscape

Gumtree's decision places it in closer alignment with other online marketplaces that embed shipping workflows within their platforms. Specialist resale sites and generalist marketplaces have invested in logistics technology as part of efforts to retain users.

Integrated shipping can increase transaction completion rates compared with listings that require offline coordination. Marketplaces also gain more visibility into transaction volumes and delivery performance.

Gumtree said ShipStation's tools will support carrier performance monitoring. The marketplace will track delivery outcomes and timings across the carrier network accessed through the API.

The companies expect the integration to expand over time. Gumtree plans to use the delivery infrastructure as it develops further transactional features across its marketplace categories.
