Sapiens launches AI-native insurance platform for insurers

Sapiens has launched its AI-native Autonomous Insurance Platform, SapiensAIP, for use within insurers' core policy administration systems.

The platform extends Sapiens' insurance software by bringing AI tools into underwriting, policy administration, billing, claims and customer engagement. Offered as a software-as-a-service product, it has three layers: a persona-based experience layer, an intelligence layer and a foundation layer based on the company's insurance data model.

According to Sapiens, the foundation layer draws on more than four decades of industry knowledge and gives AI agents the business context needed to operate within insurance workflows. It also supports the company's migration and configuration hubs, which are intended to reduce manual work in core system change projects while retaining human review.

The launch comes as insurers face pressure to modernise legacy systems while finding practical uses for AI. Core platform replacement, mergers and acquisitions, and product changes often involve long implementation cycles, particularly when large volumes of older policy and claims data must be transferred into new systems.

Migration tools

Sapiens said its Migration Hub is designed to handle four stages of data transfer: profiling, mapping, validating and extracting data. Legacy files can be ingested without reformatting, after which the system proposes how existing data should be mapped into the new environment and assigns confidence scores for review by subject matter experts.

The process is reversible and produces load-ready extracts and scripts, with the aim of reducing manual effort in migration projects while maintaining an auditable process.

A second module, the Configuration Hub, is intended to automate parts of system configuration work that often slow implementation programmes. It can take documents in different formats and map their contents to fields in target systems, again using confidence scores so teams can approve or reject proposed changes.

Each decision leaves an audit trail, the company said. That is likely to matter in insurance operations, where product rules, claims decisions and billing processes are subject to internal controls and regulatory scrutiny.

First customer

Sapiens also said Continental General is evaluating the AI tools. The Austin-based third-party administrator serves clients across life, annuity and long-term care, as well as stock life, accident and health insurance.

The insurer and administrator is assessing the platform as a way to bring books of business onto its systems more quickly and at lower cost. That points to one of the more difficult operational tasks in insurance technology, where transferring in-force policies from one system to another can be resource-intensive and risky.

Mike Ettling, executive chairman and interim CEO of Sapiens, described the launch as a marker of the company's direction. "The AI future we have been talking about is here," he said.

He also linked the product to the group's wider technology strategy. "The architecture behind SapiensAIP is the clearest expression yet of what Sapiens has become: the global insurance technology champion built to power the modern autonomous insurer of tomorrow, with a continuously improving layer of intelligence. This is an advantage no legacy architecture retrofitted with AI can match," Ettling said.

Continental General said the appeal lay in AI tools embedded in the main operating platform rather than added separately. "SapiensAIP represents the kind of platform direction we want from our technology partners - AI that's embedded in the core system, not bolted on. As a third-party administrator serving multiple carrier clients, Continental General needs tooling that can scale across programs and compress the timeline from contract to production. We're putting the Configuration Hub and Migration Hub to work against real workflows, and the early direction is promising," said Ayanna Burns, chief transformation officer at Continental General.

Market pressure

Insurance software providers have been positioning AI as a tool for practical back-office and front-office processes rather than as a standalone feature. For many insurers, the challenge is less about testing AI models and more about integrating them into policy, billing and claims systems that still rely on older architectures and fragmented data.

Sapiens is seeking to address that gap by placing AI functions in the core system layer where policy rules and operational workflows sit. Its emphasis on ontology, migration and configuration suggests it is targeting a persistent source of cost in the sector: converting documents, mapping historic data and configuring products when replacing or expanding core systems.

Paul Wheeler, CEO designate and board member at Sapiens, said the work with Continental General was intended to demonstrate direct operational impact. "SapiensAIP is what turns AI ambition into results insurers can measure," he said.

He added: "The work we are doing with Continental General shows exactly this. For insurers, this means faster time to production, lower transformation risk and a return on investment in AI working in their core systems, right now."
