Ecommpay has launched a QR code payments product for one-off transactions, aimed at merchants and charities collecting variable amounts such as tips and donations.

The product uses a single static QR code that can be displayed on printed signs, receipts or web pages. Customers can enter their own amount or choose from preset options before completing payment on a hosted payment page.

Merchants can create, customise and publish the QR code directly from Ecommpay's dashboard without development work or coding. The same code remains active until the merchant chooses to deactivate it.

The service is designed for settings where cash has traditionally been used for small discretionary purchases or contributions. Examples include restaurant tipping, charity donations, park-based fitness sessions, and sales at markets or school fairs.

How it works

The payment flow begins when a customer scans the static code, which opens a branded pre-checkout page. Merchants can configure the link in three ways: customer-defined amount only, preset amounts only, or preset amounts with an additional custom amount option.

Branding controls include the logo, background image, title, description, action button text and thank-you page. The payment page supports any payment method available through Ecommpay's platform, along with 3DS authentication and AVS checks.

Dashboard controls are limited to merchant admin and operations roles. These users can create, download, copy and deactivate the code through a self-service process.

Market use

The launch reflects a wider shift away from cash for low-value and ad hoc payments, particularly in hospitality, fundraising and small in-person trading. Static QR codes have become a common way for businesses to accept payments without dedicated card hardware, especially when the amount varies from one customer to the next.

Ecommpay, founded in 2012 and headquartered in London, provides payment processing and acquiring services through a single API. Its platform supports more than 100 payment methods.

Artus Zaremba, Head of Payment Solutions at Ecommpay, outlined the intended use cases for the product.

"We have built QR Code Payments to make it quick and simple to send one-off payments - the digital equivalent of leaving a £5 note tucked under a glass when you leave the table or throwing a few coins into a collection bucket as it passes," said Artus Zaremba, Head of Payment Solutions at Ecommpay.

"Fewer customers carry cash today, so servers and charities can miss out even if someone wants to leave a tip or make a donation. With QR Code Payments, merchants and charities can display a static QR code to help capture these payments," Zaremba said.

"This latest enhancement also provides a simple solution for small or micro-businesses to accept payments without using a card machine - for example, pay-as-you-go bootcamp sessions in the local park, or selling goods at a farmers' market or school fair. The merchant can choose whether they or the customer sets the amount and which payment methods are made available. They also set the look and feel of the payment page, ensuring they are in full control, customers get the best experience, and the same QR code can be used indefinitely until deactivated by the merchant," Zaremba said.
