AliExpress has launched its Summer Sale in the UK as its research points to widespread concern about household spending over the summer.
The online marketplace is offering discounts of up to 80% across home, garden and consumer technology products. It is also promoting its Brand+ Price Guarantee, which offers refunds for price differences on identical products found on Amazon, eBay, Shein and Temu. The scheme covers more than 2,000 brands.
A survey of 2,001 UK online shoppers who had used AliExpress found that 86% were concerned about how the rising cost of living would affect budgets for leisure and shopping, while 39% said they were very concerned.
Millennials emerged as the most pressured group in the research, with 90% concerned about spending power and 46% describing themselves as very concerned.
The findings suggest price sensitivity is shaping how shoppers judge established brands, particularly in electronics. Respondents estimated that, on average, 35% of the price of premium electronics goes on "logo and status" rather than the product itself, while 21% believed more than half of the retail price reflects the brand name.
AliExpress is using the sale to promote a broader range of goods linked to summer spending, from home and garden items to gadgets, wearables and travel accessories. Brands named as part of the Summer Sale include Xiaomi, Anker, Lubluelu, DEWALT, THINKCAR, Li-Ning and Ryzen 7.
Trust signals
The research also looked at what might persuade UK consumers to try newer technology brands. It found that 41% wanted a high volume of user reviews with ratings of 4.5 stars and above, 38% looked for a UK-based warranty and 35% wanted a money-back guarantee.
The results suggest lower prices alone may not be enough to win over buyers. Warranty terms, ratings and refund policies appear to matter alongside cost as households look for ways to manage spending without taking on more risk.
Finch Li, General Manager of AliExpress UK, linked those patterns to a broader shift in shopping behaviour. "As UK households face ongoing cost-of-living pressures, we are seeing a profound shift in consumer behaviour. British shoppers are increasingly savvy; they are assessing the actual value and functionality of what they buy. Whether it's choosing high-specification, lesser-known brands to save on technology, they won't compromise on what they want and are finding smart ways to make their money go further," Li said.
Travel budgets
The study also found that holiday spending remains in place for many households despite financial strain. Nearly two-thirds of respondents said they still planned to take a leisure holiday over the summer, with an estimated average budget of GBP £1,405 per person.
At the same time, 65% said budget constraints had limited or changed their summer travel plans. Among those adjusting their choices, 34% said they were planning a UK road trip and 26% were opting for a staycation close to home.
Budgeting concerns, value for money and transport costs ranked as the three main challenges facing holidaymakers. The research also indicated that shoppers were leaving purchases relatively late, planning and buying holiday items around three weeks in advance on average.
That creates an opening for online marketplaces selling lower-cost essentials at short notice. According to the survey, respondents were most likely to buy fashion accessories, swimwear and technology accessories such as power banks and universal adapters online before travelling.
Shoppers using the Summer Sale will also have access to site-wide coupons and PayPal-linked discounts on some purchases. AliExpress is offering tiered money-off deals for larger baskets, including GBP £90 off orders of GBP £550 or more, alongside smaller discounts on lower spending bands.
Li said the company saw an opportunity to appeal to consumers trying to protect discretionary spending during the summer. "At AliExpress, we are committed to meeting consumer demand by providing direct access to quality, high-performance products at competitive prices, backed by robust customer service and guarantees, helping Brits enjoy their summer without compromising on quality," Li said.
