UiPath has been named a Leader in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Intelligent Document Processing for the second consecutive year, placing the automation software company among the top vendors assessed in the market.

Intelligent document processing, or IDP, focuses on extracting data from unstructured and semi-structured documents such as invoices, contracts, claim forms, and scanned records. The field has drawn growing attention as companies look for ways to apply artificial intelligence to routine business processes that still rely heavily on paperwork and fragmented data.

UiPath said its approach focuses on turning document content into structured, verified data that software agents can use in automated workflows. It argued this step is necessary because many AI systems struggle when information remains buried in files and communications rather than presented in a format software can act on directly.

UiPath highlighted UiPath IXP as the product behind its document processing offering, saying the software uses generative AI models to interpret complex unstructured documents and convert them into data suitable for downstream business processes.

This is especially important in document-heavy functions such as accounts payable and claims review, where organisations often deal with large volumes of forms, records, and correspondence. In these settings, accurate data extraction can determine whether automation handles an entire process or merely assists a human worker with part of it.

UiPath has increasingly tied its document processing tools to its broader push into what it calls agentic automation. The aim is to connect AI-driven reasoning with software execution, allowing systems not only to identify information but also to complete actions within business workflows.

Badri Narayanan, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at UiPath, made that case in a statement accompanying the announcement.

"Enterprises don't need an AI agent that can talk about their business; they need one that can act on it. That requires reading documents with the same accuracy and context a skilled employee would bring. UiPath IXP gives agents that capability, turning invoices, contracts, and claims into structured, verified data an agent can act on with confidence. This enables more efficient automated business processes and improves decision intelligence. This is the foundation that separates AI that assists from AI that runs the process," said Badri Narayanan, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at UiPath.

Market focus

The recognition also reflects how central document handling has become in enterprise AI deployments. While much attention has centred on chatbots and large language models, businesses still face a more practical challenge: moving information from contracts, bills, forms, and correspondence into systems that control finance, operations, and customer service.

Without that step, many automation projects struggle to move beyond limited pilots. AI tools may summarise or classify documents, but operational gains depend on whether the extracted information is reliable enough to trigger approvals, route cases, settle claims, or update records automatically.

Gartner's Magic Quadrant reports are closely watched in enterprise software because they offer a comparative view of vendors in a defined market segment. Vendors named Leaders are generally seen as combining a clear strategic direction with an established ability to serve customers at scale.

UiPath cited Gartner's description of the category in the report.

"A Leader must have a market-leading vision and the ability to deliver on that vision. Leaders have an insightful understanding of the IDP market, a reliable track record, the power to influence the market's direction, and an ability to attract and retain customers. In the IDP market, Leaders demonstrate understanding of enterprise customers' needs and of opportunities to expand functionality and add new modules and services to their core IDP offerings," said Gartner.

Broader strategy

For UiPath, the recognition supports a broader effort to extend beyond its roots in robotic process automation. The company has been repositioning itself around orchestration, automation, and AI, seeking to show it can manage more complex workflows involving both deterministic software tasks and probabilistic AI models.

Document processing is a key part of that strategy because it sits at the point where business information first enters many operational systems. If documents can be interpreted consistently and fed into workflows, vendors such as UiPath can argue that automation expands from repetitive screen-based tasks to end-to-end process execution.

UiPath also pointed to its user community and partner ecosystem as part of its market position. Those factors remain important in enterprise software, where implementation support and integration work often influence buying decisions as much as the underlying technology.

As companies continue to test where AI delivers measurable returns, document processing remains one of the clearest areas for operational use. The market's next phase is likely to depend less on AI's ability to converse and more on whether systems can extract, verify, and act on the information businesses already hold in their documents.
