tem has appointed Berian James as General Manager of Rosso as the energy transactions company expands the infrastructure product to third parties.

James will lead Rosso, tem's energy transaction system, as the company enables other businesses to price energy and run operations through an application programming interface or white-label product instead of building their own systems.

The appointment brings in an executive with experience in data science, payments, shipping and energy trading. James joined Square in San Francisco in 2012 as a founding data scientist and worked on machine learning systems during the company's expansion. He later led AI and data science at Maersk across shipping and logistics, and built machine learning infrastructure for Copenhagen Energy Trading.

At tem, he will open Rosso to external users beyond the company's own operations, marking the next stage of a strategy to turn internal infrastructure into a product for other businesses in the energy market.

Rosso has facilitated more than 6TWh of energy transactions across more than 8,000 sites, according to tem. The system has returned more than USD $80 million in transaction fees to customers, a figure the company said has risen by more than 200% over the past year.

tem recently raised USD $75 million in a Series B funding round and said it has more than doubled its team this year. The funding has supported growth in Rosso and the wider expansion of the business, the company said.

Opening up

Rosso is designed to handle pricing and operational functions used in business energy supply. These include forecasting electricity demand across settlement periods, pricing against wholesale markets and network costs, and running back-office processes such as billing, metering, service and payments, according to tem.

The company said much of the energy sector still relies on older systems and manual workflows. Rosso is intended to replace those processes with a single software platform that combines forecasting and pricing tools with operational systems.

tem said time-to-price is moving towards under a minute. It described Rosso as a system built from a live portfolio of generators and businesses, rather than through a chain of intermediaries in wholesale markets.

Customers named by tem include Boohoo Group, Newcastle United, Fever-Tree and Silverstone Circuit. Those accounts are spread across more than 8,000 sites, according to the company.

Industry focus

James said the energy sector has lagged behind other industries in technology investment despite its central role in the economy.

"Energy has an outsized effect on every economy on earth, and it has not had anything like the attention it deserves from the world's best technology companies. Throughout my career I've seen how outdated infrastructure acts as a drag on business growth - delaying hires, expansion, and innovation. Advancements in AI and ML mean we have a unique opportunity to redesign these systems and put power back into the hands of business owners. I joined tem because I believe Rosso will be pivotal in reshaping one of the most important growth levers in our economy - energy," James said.

Chief Executive Officer Joe McDonald said Rosso sits at the centre of tem's business model and growth plans.

"Rosso lies at the heart of our mission to build the transaction infrastructure for the electron economy. It solves one of the hardest problems in energy - pricing, fulfilling, balancing and settling power against a probabilistic outcome - and has put millions in transaction fees back into the hands of businesses and generators. tem is now at a genuine inflection point: adoption is accelerating and Rosso's scale is compounding fast, with every new contract sharpening the model further and pushing time-to-price closer to real time. Berian has spent his career building systems that other multinational businesses depend on, and now he's building the operational leadership Rosso needs to match its pace as it becomes the infrastructure the global energy industry relies on," McDonald said.
