Huma launches AI tool to automate clinical note-taking

Yesterday

Huma has introduced Hi Scribe, an artificial intelligence tool designed to automate and streamline clinical note-taking and billing, which can integrate directly into electronic health record systems.

According to Huma, Hi Scribe is currently active in 870 practices that serve a total of 10 million patients, and the company is scaling the tool on a global level through government and enterprise partnerships.

Hi Scribe operates on Huma's proprietary AI foundation, known as Huma Intelligence (Hi), utilising insights drawn from more than 60 million patient consultations via eConsult, an entity acquired by Huma last year.

The tool is available as part of the Huma Cloud Platform and automates the creation of real-time, structured clinical documentation. It is designed for both face-to-face and virtual care, aiming to support clinicians across various digital health delivery settings.

In the United Kingdom, Hi Scribe has already been rolled out to practices using EMIS and SystmOne systems, enabling automated writeback and coding. Huma's partnership with Google Cloud underpins Hi Scribe's secure and scalable delivery, which the company states meets clinical compliance requirements for frontline healthcare professionals.

"Administrative burdens—from documentation to process compliance and accurate billing—are among the greatest challenges facing healthcare systems globally. Hi Scribe gives clinicians critical time back, allowing them to focus on what matters most: their patients. We're excited to roll this out across the 4,500+ health systems and clinics powered by Huma technologies around the world," Huma's Chief Executive Officer and Founder, Dan Vahdat, said.

The company emphasises that Hi Scribe aligns with the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) requirements as a medical device and is part of Huma's overarching, globally compliant technology platform. The integration into EHR systems is intended to ensure clinicians can submit documentation without interrupting existing workflows.

Huma frames Hi Scribe as a tool that supports a broader care enablement strategy, aiming to reduce clinicians' documentation workload and enhance the consistency and quality of care.

The launch of Hi Scribe follows NHS England's recently issued guidance supporting the use of artificial intelligence in clinical documentation, and Huma reports it is expanding the availability of the solution in over 70 countries, with an international footprint encompassing 50 million engaged individuals.

"This tool brings clinicians' attention back to their patients. By leveraging generative AI with strong regulatory governance, we are ensuring safe, effective, and efficient care. We are excited in the near future to start helping care providers with intelligent suggestions for next steps—ensuring that nothing is left unnoticed. We built this product in partnership with Opencast - a leading UK tech consultancy," Dr. Murray Ellender, Head of UK Healthcare at Huma, stated.

"Using Hi Scribe to transcribe my medical notes has transformed my day—saving me 2-3 minutes every consultation, reducing pressure, and letting me focus fully on my patients. I have more headspace to think, listen, and make decisions. It's brought back more of the most satisfying part of practicing medicine—truly engaging and connecting with my patients," Dr Ross Dyer-Smith, an NHS General Practitioner who has used Hi Scribe, commented.

In the United States, Huma has partnered with Wheel, a telemedicine provider, to deploy Hi Scribe in virtual care environments via Wheel's Horizon platform. This implementation is positioned to support ongoing government-led digital health efforts with an aim towards nationwide adoption.

"Clinicians shouldn't have to choose between delivering great care and managing documentation. At Wheel, we're always looking for ways to make their jobs easier without adding friction. With Hi Scribe now integrated into Horizon, we're excited to be among the first to bring this kind of transformative AI technology to virtual care in the U.S.— giving our partners and their patients a better experience," Michelle Davey, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Wheel, said.

As Wheel advances its integration of Hi Scribe, the tool will be made accessible to enterprises and digital health partners, with the aim of broadening AI-powered documentation across virtual care delivery in the United States.

Huma reports it has entered into numerous agreements with governments in several countries to deploy Hi Scribe at a national scale. The company says the solution aims to address the challenge of capturing clinical notes and facilitating their automatic entry into EMR systems—a hurdle for many countries as they accelerate digitalisation of healthcare infrastructure.
